Dear friends,

Journalism has shaped my life and my identity.

I love asking questions, grappling with difficult moral issues, learning about politics, economics, governance – as a reporter, seeing life through the eyes of the many people who trusted me with their stories.

I’ve seen the best and the worst of human nature.

Every experience and difficult decision – from coverage to hostage negotiations to pivoting and building organizations – have demanded clarity of thought and defined my values, hard-won and not something I would compromise.

Rapplers are just like me. Which is why we will not duck this moment in our history and the commitment it demands.

Globally, technology has brought us to the edge of the precipice, and we are in a battle to define truth and facts – to protect the public spaces where different voices can freely exchange ideas necessary to a healthy democracy.

Here at home, we’ve been attacked by at least eight government offices in 2018. Our society’s need for the mission of journalism has never been greater, especially when power and money combine to foment fear.

We will not be bullied. We will not be intimidated. We will not be silenced.

There is no better time to be a journalist.

But it isn’t good business.

So we need your help.

SUPPORT RAPPLER

Thank you to those who helped us raise more than P2.5 million in our country’s first crowdfunding campaign for news. All that will be spent on our legal expenses from at least 6 government initiated harassment suits.

If you believe what we are doing is essential to protect our democracy, please consider donating to our legal fund to help us hold the line.

We’ve learned a lot and are in the process of pivoting our business model. I’m certain we will succeed – with your help.

Best,
Maria
